Everyone who attends the Olympics has an individual experience. Some of us will have this experience more than once; others only once. For some, an Olympic experience is only attainable when the Olympics come to their side of the world. Seven years ago, it was announced that the Olympic Winter Games were coming to my side of the world. At the time I never considered how I might record this momentous occasion. But a lot of things have changed since then. In 2003, there was no YouTube; digital cameras and camcorders were marketed towards an expensive fringe with deep pocketbooks; and editing software was still in the hands of professionals. Now everyone can be a reporter; a documentary filmmakers; a broadcaster. I knew I had to do something for posterity, and to produce something to share with my YouTube contacts. So, in between the thirteen shifts that I volunteered working for VANOC, I tired to get out and see as much as possible. In the end I did not see all of the sights that I had wanted, and other sights which I had never dreamed of seeing dropped before my lens. I do not feel this is my best work, but at least it is something which hopefully conveys a little of the indelible experience of the last month. Included here in Part 1: February 18: Stephen Colbert on the second day of taping The Colbert Report in Vancouver. All of these stills, audio and video were filmed by my brother. Victory Ceremony. The ticket was literally handed to me by my supervisor that afternoon. I had enough time to go home, grab my equipment, race downtown to BC Place, and discover I was being checked into a suite with a lovely tabletop for my mini-tripod. I was on hand to witness the following athletes receive their medals: Gold Medalist: Shaun White (USA) Snowboard, Mens Halfpipe Gold Medalist: Shani Davis (USA) Speed Skating, Mens 1000 m Silver Medalist: Marianne St-Gelais (CAN) Short Track, Ladies 500 m Gold Medalist: Christine Nesbitt (CAN) Speed Skating, Ladies 1000 m February 19: My first day out in the city. I started by visiting LiveCity Yaletown on the shore of False Creek. The wait to get in was 30 minutes; it had reached 60 minutes by the time I left. After two hours of waiting and standing in lineups, I finally met the Coca Cola Bear. Afterwards, I headed over to the Cauldron at the Main Media Center overlooking Burrard Inlet. As you can see, everyone was trying to peer through the fence to get their shots. There was another wait of 30 minutes to view the flame from an elevated platform, but I had been through enough waiting for one day and was content enough to simply film the crowd.

Mar 23, 2010 - @64mung Now we have entered into the disbelieving, "Did that all really happen?" post-games period. Oh yes, it did happen; the whole wonderful thing did happen! Thanks my friend.
